Old Money: Researching
Wealthy Families
This session takes an
in-depth look at researching
inherited family wealth
through historical research.
Researchers often get
research requests with
comments like “we hear there
is family money” or “we
heard that her
great-grandfather made a
fortune in the New England
whaling industry.” This
program explores researching
historical news archives,
census data, ship
registries, birth, marriage,
and death records, family
trees, and much more. We
will look at books
cataloguing the great
fortunes and the families
that controlled those
fortunes. We will look at
the calculations involved in
estimating the current value
of a particular heir’s stake
in a family fortune.

Red
State/Blue State: mining political
contributors for philanthropy:
Can the philanthropic sector benefit
from the political schisms in America?
This program will explore ways in
which philanthropic organizations can
identify the wealthy political
contributors who are most likely to
support their mission. Are supporters
of conservative causes and candidates
more likely to support religious
education? Are donors to liberal PACs
more likely to support human service
agencies? Who gives to the politicians
closely aligned with your
organization? The program will look at
how to acquire lists of political
donors and strategies to
electronically screen your constituent
database for high-level political
givers. Participants will receive a
valuable resource list to pursue
implementation strategies.
